The city's park system is one of the better arguments for living here. Falls Park is the obvious one, with the Big Sioux running over quartzite at the north edge of downtown, but the more useful daily asset is the bike trail loop that circles the city and follows the river for much of its length. It connects neighborhoods, parks and downtown, and it is plowed in winter along parts of the route.

Beyond that there are large parks with playgrounds and shelters, sports complexes, disc golf, dog parks, fishing access along the river, and the Outdoor Campus on the east side for anyone learning to hunt, fish or paddle.

Shelters at the bigger parks are reservable and go quickly for summer weekends. Spring flooding can close sections of trail along the river, so check conditions after a wet stretch.
