Medical care in Sioux Falls: who licenses whom, and which door to use

The listings in this category run from physicians and nurse practitioners to chiropractors, physical therapists, psychologists, and specialty practices. Different professions, different scopes, and, less obviously, different licensing boards. "Is this person licensed" has a different answer depending on who is being asked about.

Three boards, not one

The South Dakota Board of Medical and Osteopathic Examiners licenses MDs, DOs, and physician assistants, along with athletic trainers, dietitians, EMS personnel, genetic counselors, licensed nutritionists, occupational therapists and assistants, and respiratory care practitioners. Its office is on North Phillips Avenue here in Sioux Falls.

Nurses and advanced practice registered nurses fall under the South Dakota Board of Nursing instead, which is a separate body, so a certified nurse practitioner does not appear in the medical board's records at all. Each board runs its own licensee lookup, and the medical board posts disciplinary and conditioned-license actions separately from the main search. What those searches return is a state record rather than a review, which makes them the only free source showing what a board has actually done about a complaint.

Clinic, urgent care, emergency department

These are three levels of care and also three billing categories. An emergency department is staffed and equipped to handle emergencies around the clock and bills on that basis, including a facility charge, no matter how minor the problem turns out to be. Urgent care exists for same-day problems that are not emergencies. A primary clinic is usually the least expensive of the three and is the only one that already holds a patient's history.

Chest pain, stroke symptoms, trouble breathing, and serious bleeding are what the emergency department is for, and the cost comparison does not apply to any of them.

Two local details

Falls Community Health, run by the city health department, is a federally qualified health center with both a medical and a dental clinic. Its fees slide with income against the federal poverty guidelines, it accepts Medicare, Medicaid, and most insurance, and it does not turn patients away for inability to pay.

South Dakota expanded Medicaid on July 1, 2023, after voters approved Constitutional Amendment D. Coverage now reaches adults under 65 up to 138 percent of the federal poverty level, so an eligibility answer from before that date may simply be out of date.
