Location is really a question of which cluster
The Denny Sanford Premier Center, the Sioux Falls Convention Center and the Sioux Falls Arena share one campus at 1201 N. West Avenue, reached from I-29 exit 81 by way of Russell Street. The three buildings are joined to each other, and to an adjoining hotel, by enclosed climate controlled walkways, which is worth something in February. Sioux Falls Regional Airport sits on the same Russell Street corridor, so one pocket of hotels covers both an early flight and an arena show. Downtown around Phillips Avenue and Falls Park is the walkable pocket. The 41st Street corridor at I-29 exit 77 is the mall cluster, and there is a newer group on the east side near I-229.
Four stretches of the year move the whole market
The Summit League men's and women's basketball championships run at the Premier Center in early March, March 4 through 8 in 2026, and are contracted to stay in Sioux Falls through 2029. The Howard Wood Dakota Relays bring more than 3,000 middle and high school athletes to Howard Wood Field the first weekend in May. The Sioux Empire Fair fills the W.H. Lyon Fairgrounds for nine days at the turn of August. The Sanford International, a PGA Tour Champions stop, plays Minnehaha Country Club in mid-September.
2026 broke a 65-year run: no state high school basketball tournament in Sioux Falls, because the Premier Center was holding an NCAA Division II wrestling championship and a Division I hockey regional that March. The tournament returns to the city in 2027.
Summer is the season, but event nights are the spikes
June through August is the busy stretch, and 2025 brought 3.4 million visitors and $1.2 billion in visitor spending to Sioux Falls. Through April of 2026, city figures had occupancy up nearly 3 percent and room rates up about 4 percent over the year before. Still, the tight night is usually not a July night. It is whatever night the arena is full.
The state inspects lodging and posts the results
South Dakota licenses hotels, bed and breakfasts, specialty resorts and vacation homes through the Department of Health, which inspects them and publishes the findings. The public lookup carries the last two years of inspections for each licensed establishment, lodging as well as food service.
