Harrisburg, Tea and the ring towns

Harrisburg, Tea, Brandon, Hartford and the smaller towns around Sioux Falls hold 193 of our published listings between them. What those listings are is the useful part, and it catches people out.

Across all eleven ring towns our listings fall into 17 categories. Sixteen of the seventeen are trades or home services. Auto Repair leads with 30, then Landscaping with 21, Concrete and Paving with 20, and Electricians with 18. The seventeenth category is a single real estate office in Harrisburg. There is not one restaurant, coffee shop, bar or salon among the whole 193.

Why the mix looks like that

These are towns people live in and commute out of. The businesses based in them are the ones that travel to the work: plumbers, roofers, concrete crews, cleaners, movers. The storefronts their residents use are mostly in Sioux Falls.

So a ring town listing is rarely somewhere you go. It is where a business is based before it drives to you.

The counts, town by town

Tea has 66 listings, Harrisburg 50, Brandon 42, Hartford 16. After that the numbers fall away fast: Renner 7, Crooks 4, Valley Springs 3, Baltic 2, and one each in Rowena, Lennox and Chancellor.

That is why no single ring town has its own page here. Hartford's 16 listings spread across 11 categories, which averages under two options per trade. A page like that reads as a directory and works as a dead end.

Addresses out here behave differently

Many ring town addresses are rural route numbers rather than street names. K&T Electric Inc. is at 46964 100th Street in Tea. Summit Plumbing, Inc. is at 47392 272nd Street in Harrisburg. Those are legitimate and locatable, but they will not autocomplete the way a city address does. Copy the whole line rather than the first few characters.

What this means when you are hiring

A ring town trade will usually come into Sioux Falls, and a Sioux Falls trade will usually go out to the ring towns. Distance is rarely the limit. Ask about the service area instead of guessing from the address, and ask whether a travel charge applies, because some firms add one past the city line and some do not.

Before you commit

Work out which jurisdiction the job sits in before anyone talks about permits. Permits, inspections and contractor requirements are handled by the municipality, and Harrisburg, Tea, Brandon and Hartford are each separate from Sioux Falls and from each other.
